Walter Alexander Montgomery (1845-1921) was born in Warrenton, N.C., and served in the Confederate Army, 1861-1865. He practiced law in Warrenton until 1893 except for a brief period, 1872-1875, in Memphis, Tenn. He moved to Raleigh, N.C., in 1893, was Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of North Carolina, 1894-1904, and resumed the practice of law in Raleigh until his death.
